Jeg sendte dette brevet til Vietnams statsminister i dag. (Jeg traff Thuy i Hanoi da jeg ble kastet ut av landet.) Vietnamese writer Tran Khai Thanh Thuy, age 48, was arrested on October 8, 2009 after supporting fellow democracy activists on trial. Your government sent plain-clothes police to harass her family. Tran Khai Thanh Thuy was hit with bricks and suffered head injuries. The incident was witnessed by her 13 year old daughter who was left alone after police took Thuy and her husband away. While the couple was detained, your state-controlled media began publishing a fabricated version of the actual events which led to the arrest. Subsequently charged Tran Khai Thanh Thuy with assault. The jailing of Tran Khai Thanh Thuy and recent sentencing of nine democracy activists highlight the ongoing crackdown in Vietnam against political expression. Human Rights Watch has called Vietnam “a place where the government harshly suppresses peaceful dissent, free speech, independent media, and open access to the internet, and does everything it can to silence its critics.” I urge you to free Tran Khai Thanh Thuy immediately.
